Hello! First of all happy New Year! I hope everyone of you had an amazing New Year's eve because I definitely had. This post may be a little different (which is probably a good thing because it needs admitting that some of my post are chaotic and weird rants ...sorry) but I really wanted to write about something else. So here are my favorites from 2013 (yeah I use this as an opportunity to fangirl):
MUSIC:
From left to right:
1. Long.Live.A$AP by A$AP Rocky: although I listen to indie music most of the time, I really do appreciate a good hiphop album and this one is really, really good.
2. AM by Arctic Monkeys: ah yes if I had to pick one ultimate favorite from this list I would definitely choose this one. You have probably seen me fangirling
here and maybe
here (yes I have a separate Arctic Monkeys tumblr ok don't judge me). But I swear this record is my life. I actually had a countdown app on my phone to the day that it would be released. I just knew that it would live up to my expectations after hearing Do I Wanna Know and Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High. Well I could go on for five pages about what this album means to me but I wont be bothering you guys with that. But one last thing: I am seeing them in July at Rock Werchter with
Marie!!!!!!!!!! (I can't use enough exclamation marks).
3. Modern Vampires Of The City by Vampire Weekend: This album just makes me so happy and it was a perfect soundtrack for this summer.
4. Where The Heaven Are We by Swim Deep. Don't really have to say anything specific about this album: it is just really catchy and cool.
5. Night Time, My Time by Sky Ferreira: Sky is a Queen and this record just screams 'whatever to cool for you guys'. Couldn't agree more with her.
6. Beyoncé by Beyoncé: uhm DUH.
8. Rumours (35th anniversary special edition) by Fleetwood Mac: I got this special edition box set for my birthday and it is one of my favorite vinyls. SO GOOD. 9. Reflektor by Arcade Fire. I love Arcade Fire but this is actually my least favorite album of the band. It is still awesome & but I was kind of disappointed the first time I listened to it. But oh well that is probably because nothing could top The Suburbs.
MOVIES:
1. Ginger& Rosa by Sally Potter: I saw this film in really late December so it is a last minute entry in my personal charts. First of all: Elle Fanning acts so well it is insane and she just rules. I kind of just want to be best friends with her. Also the vibes in this movie wowowowow. After watching this I plan on wearing men shirts and turtlenecks for the rest of 2014 (ok not really but I wish I was disciplined enough). But go watch it! It is free on the internet somwhere I guess (#beingillegal #yolo #nomoneytobuymovies).
2. The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrman: Gah where to start! The soundtrack, the clothes, the decor, the parties, the storyline. It is everything I hoped for when I saw the trailer.
3. The Bling Ring by Sofia Coppola: This doesn't even need explaining. Go watch if you haven't seen it yet!
BOOKS:
I actually haven't read any books that came out this year but I read loads of older books in 2013 so I am just going to pretend that the following books are fresh-cuts. (so badass).
1. Franny & Zooey by J.D. Salinger: Although it took me a while to read this one, it is one of the most endearing books I have read so far! I just could relate a lot too Franny ( don't worry I don't have a mental breakdown) and the ending is so powerful! Like wow.
2. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton: I wrote about this book before
here and I even included it in my
halloween costumes idea article for The Pulp Zine so it obviously had to be included.
3. Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block: This is obviously no high brow literature but I really enjoyed reading it last spring and it left just so many good vibes. I read the whole serie but I enjoyed Weetzie Bat the most.
4. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi: I am not sure whether I read it for the first time in 2013 (I think I read it for the first time two years ago) but I picked it up again in 2013 and it deserves its place. Marjane gives a really good perspective about Iran and it is really intresting. I also really like the way this is drawn.
5. An Extraordinary Theory Of Object by Stephanie Lacava: Again the drawings are amazing and it is a beautiful written coming of age story, for understandable reasons totally my genre
6. Building Stories by Chris Ware: Chris Ware, ah do I need say more????
Love,
Ibe
